Gadolinium

Gadolinium is a paramagnetic metal ion which is injected into the blood as an intravenous radiocontrast agent to enhance images in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs) and other imaging. The FDA has requested that the manufacturers of Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA's) help define the risk of disease. The FDA ordered a black box warning in May 2007.

Gadolinium is dangerous in patients with kidney diseases. It can cause a painful and incurable disease, nephrogenic system fibrosis (NSF). Literature on this risk goes back several years. NSF causes fibrosis of the skin and connective tissues throughout the body, as well as fibrosis in the diaphragm, muscles in the thigh and abdomen, and lung vessels. NSF becomes worse over the years and can cause death.

One treatment sometimes suggested for NSF involves a process which basically takes the blood out, scrubs it, and puts it back, costing around $30,000.00 per visit. There is no real cure known for NSF.
